OWIE

For a long time now,I was gleeful that I can handle any food without being subjected to weird side effects. But eating at my office pantry deflated my balloon of glee. My stomach seems to intensely dislike chilies. I've been hurting and hurting for the past few days and it took me sometime to figure out the dark source. Damn you chili! You gave my stomach an owiee!! >_<

Let Not Man Separate

I recommend you guys to read this… I read it three times… Yes it is long but believe me, its worth it. I promise.

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly.

She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.

She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane.

When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day.

She requested that every day for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife’s divorce conditions. . She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside
the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me.

On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn’t tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me… she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy.

I drove to office…. jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind…I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart.

Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.

At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed – dead.
My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push through with the divorce.— At least, in the eyes of our son—- I’m a loving husband….

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

If you don’t share this, nothing will happen to you.

If you do, you just might save a marriage.
Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate. Matthew 19:6.

Where art thou? de l'électricité...

Its 107 degree Fahrenheit outside during the day and the heat DOES NOT simmer down even during the night. While I spend most of my time indoors (college life is over! Yay!) it becomes increasingly unbearable because of the one thing people here dread of.

POWER OUTAGE

Though I live in the heart of the city, here is the status:

EVERY SINGLE DAMNED DAY OF THE MONTH:

Power cut for an hour. The hour varies from area to area, one day to another. While in one it might be from 10am to 11 am , in another it might be from 4pm to 5pm.

COUPLE OF TIMES PER WEEK: Power cut for 3 solid hours. Bearable during the day but if it happens at night, you’ll find unhappy, disgruntled and angry people in the morning.

THE ULTIMATE WEAPON OF ...

DOOM..

Among the locals it’s popularly known as MAINTENANCE. Ah...the dreaded word of words... every single soul’s nightmare... Power cut for 9 to 10 hours at a stretch. During the day, manageable. If at night... God save us :( Occurs one day per week, randomly.

The things I get done during this period of no touch with technology are numerous. The list will be dealt with in the next post ^_^

FREAKIN HOT Vs UBER COOL

Don’t get any ideas ppl, M talking about the weather! :P Its September and living down south you’d think that it will start raining soon. At least cloud a bit (the sun’s been venting off its hotter –than- lava –shine on us for the past few days). But no! You’ll continue to feel the scorching sun all through the day and its heat waves lashing at night. Unless you happen to live an air conditioned room X_X

Yesterday it was so darn hot!!! The wind was practically breathing fire at noon as we walked towards our mess hall and thanks to our umbrellas our heads were saved from becoming frying pans. We prayed and cursed but not a rain cloud in the sky.

It was 3pm and the siren rang. The prison (read as coll) freed us and the mad rush (road runner style :P) towards the bus stop started. At 3.15 the buses left campus and a miracle happened. The skies clouded. The sun, contrary to its eye blinding dominance, became a translucent object in the sky. The humans hoorayed!! :D and the rain followed. The small kids in my neighborhood danced and played and man! Wish I could have joined them when they stared sailing their paper boats in the small creeks of rain water. I would have tried my new model of boat I made with Chris and Von at Cake Walk that day! :P and the nights are so so cold now!! I have to snuggle up in my pink and blue blankie inside the candy pink mosquito net!! :P

Look at the clouds!!!! :D Took this last eve :D

Its 12am now and I finally figured out how to make the best use of Windows Movie maker!!! Yaayy!! And Von, thanks a lot! :) If you had tried helping me out (like you always do :) ) I wouldn’t have stumbled upon things I never knew WMM supported! And I feel so happy and satisfied!!! :) Now I understand how you feel when you do programs :) and I’ve been struggling with WMM from 6pm so that the Decode video will turn out exactly like how I intended it to X_X my persistence has finally paid off :D

And Chris, thanks for your support :) it means a lot to me since you are the one who continually inspires me to write in my blog :) hopefully I’ll reach your level of simple sophistication someday! :D

Yaaaaawwnnn… think I’ll go sleep now.. will get up in the morning to finish off the video! :D

Smile! Smile!! Smile!!! :)

OF SOUNDTRACKS AND SYMPOSIUM

I’ve been wanting to hear the soundtracks from Twilight for a very long time and I managed to hear two of them yesterday :D

Ø Decode by Paramore

Ø Full Moon by The Black ghosts

Decode is the song that plays during the credits and even though I cant understand what she’s trying to sing, the music is cool and hence I liked it :)

Full moon is the one that’s played at the beginning of the movie when Bella leaves home and arrives at Forks. It’s got this really cool and eerie music and the lyrics are also weird enough to make me ponder what they really mean! :D

M downloading the latest Bleach episode and I badly wanna download One piece but that means having to wake up early in the morning and sitting before ma PC. Not such a good idea. Especially when my coll bus arrives at 6.30am! :(

And yeah, there’s my coll symposium for all departments coming up this Saturday. All are welcome :)

You can check out the stuff happening there at this link:

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Noo these windows are ok to lean on.

Don’t worry it has airbags.

Hey what’s that buzzing noise?

Don’t worry its not that deep.

No, he doesn’t bite?.

Hey look a light at the end of the tunnel.

My brakes are fine.

Nice doggy
.

I think it's trying to communicate...

"Don't touch the red button!"

It's fireproof.

What does this button do?

Are you sure the power is off?

Pull the pin and count to what?

Which wire was I supposed to cut?

I wonder where the mother bear is.

I've seen this done on TV.

These are the good kind of mushrooms. .

I'll hold it and you light the fuse.

This doesn't taste right.

I can do that with my eyes closed

look ma! no hands!

Hey that's not a violin.

Don't be so superstitious.

Now watch this.

"How's he gonna read that magazine rolled up like that?" -- insect

Don't worry, I'm sure it's dead by now.

Let's split up, we'll cover more ground.

I dunno, press the button and find out.

Hello, is anyone home?

Oops.

Don't worry, it's not contagious.

Awright, let's see, how do we work this thing?

Trust me, I know what I'm doing.

He can't hear us, he's miles away

I'll be right back.

I'm sure this isn't the poisonous kind.

Don't worry, we outnumber them.

Hey, what the hell??!

Hey, what's that beeping sound?

I'm sure it's just the wind.

Of course it's safe!

No, this tribe is peaceful!

No, I'm sure they cleaned out this mine field years ago.

Wait, I thought he was with you!

So, you're sure this isn't loaded?

Calm down, of course I disarmed it!

Well, it can't get any worse!

C'mon! This CAN'T be the self-destruct button. If it was, they wouldn't leave it lying around like this where anyone could push it!

Don't worry, they'll never find us in here!

William, is that you?

They can't hit us at this range!

All you have to do is connect these two wires.

There's only one way to find out...

Hey, when it comes to driving on snow and ice, I'm the best there is.

These pills are awfully small.. I'll take a few more to be sure they work.

Stupid safety labels...

Watch, I'll prove it!

Blast off!

Speaking of lost, where are we?

Wheeeeeeeeee!

I know this great shortcut we can take.

Is that what I think it is?

What? Everyone knows the Titanic is unsinkable.

For God's sake, Kris, it was just a cheesecake

No, no, no, let me fix it!

ANIMALS AND EARTHQUAKES

Got this from The Straight Dope too.. :D

Can animals sense earthquakes?

Dear Cecil:
Can animals sense earthquakes? I've heard stories about cats carrying their litter of kittens out of a building just prior to a quake. Is there any truth in it? We've had two quakes in the last three hours, and my goldfish didn't do a thing.
— Nick E, Manchester, England

Cecil replies:

Of course animals can sense earthquakes. Human beings can sense earthquakes. Some years ago a friend of mine in California walked out the door and saw the parking lot in front of him rippling like a flag in a stiff breeze. Without hesitation he concluded: This is an earthquake. The real feat would be sensing a quake an appreciable time in advance. Scientists haven't given up hope of finding animals capable of this, with a view to figuring out how to do it themselves. But so far it's been a slow job.

The idea that animals act funny before an earthquake hits has been out there for thousands of years. However, even if we accept that it's not out of the question, we have to ask: How would this work? What would the animals be picking up on?

Some possibilities, as discussed in a 2000 article in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America:

• P-waves — the fast-traveling primary seismic waves that show up just before things start getting tossed around. Humans aren't good at sensing these, but animals might be. "Numerous observations exist of animals displaying panic in the few seconds prior to the onset of strong ground shaking . . . including dogs barking, nervous cats jumping out of windows, birds screaming, rats running out of their holes, bees swarming, etc.," we read. Obvious problem: all a few seconds gives you is a head start on freaking out.

• Ground tilt, which supposedly has been detected hours prior to some Asian quakes. But the tilt angles are microscopic, and thus far there's no hard evidence animals can perceive such tiny shifts.

• Humidity changes. Rising groundwater levels have been detected before some quakes, leading some to conjecture that more moisture would be forced into the air, where animals could notice it. Even in explanation this sounds tortured, and it's hard to imagine how a critter could recognize quake-driven humidity amid normal variation.

• Electromagnetic field fluctuations. A lot of people favor this angle, as it's been proven earthquakes can generate detectable electromagnetic activity right before they happen. ("Earthquake lights," the creepy bluish-white flashes that sometimes appear over fault lines before a quake, may be a related phenomenon.) While land animals seem to be fairly oblivious to electrical activity, fish can be attuned to it, and it's possible magneto sensitive animals such as birds and bees could pick up on it too.

• Low-frequency sound. This one is easy to believe, given how much better animal hearing is than ours. One happenstance observation in the Mojave Desert showed dogs could detect low-frequency "booms" from earthquake aftershocks that a seismometer registered but researchers didn't notice.
For argument's sake let's say it's possible for animals to detect quakes in advance. Do they actually ever do it? Some results:

• A study of lost pet ads in the San Jose Mercury News showed no increase in runaway animals before Bay Area quakes, despite claims to the contrary.

• Researchers in the Mojave who happened to be studying a colony of harvester ants during 1992's Landers earthquake saw no change in the ants' behavior before, during, or after the quake.

• A group of 1,200 observers in California who were supposed to report cases of strange animal behavior made no more calls than normal prior to the Coyote Lake earthquake in 1979, but a rush of calls right after, having apparently re-evaluated what they'd seen before the event. At a nearby animal park some behavior was noted as strange but turned out to be pretty common stuff: a shark that lunged out of the water in a reportedly unprecedented manner actually did so about once a week, and a cougar that was especially grumpy prequake seemed to have been grumpy afterward, too, most likely due to a stomachache.

The most widely cited claim of successful animal earthquake prediction is probably the Haicheng, China, quake of February 4, 1975. Official reports said snakes emerged from their winter burrows and froze to death, birds tried to carry eggs from their nests, cows broke their halters and fled, rats acted drunk, and police dogs howled and misbehaved. Chinese authorities boasted that their forecasting prowess had prevented many casualties. Two problems: Numerous foreshocks a day in advance made it obvious something was brewing. More tellingly, the Tangshan earthquake that struck the same region the following year — killing perhaps 240,000 people — went unpredicted.
None of this has stopped people from trying to draw connections, of course. There's even a Web site, petquake.org, where folks can report whatever batshit antics their pets are up to so anybody who's interested can watch for the next big one. The rest of us will just keep an eye out for foreshocks, rising groundwater, and creepy blue lights.

MOONLESS EARTH

I came across this in a site named The Straight Dope, where a guy had asked:

I plan to destroy the moon. What effect would this have on the earth?

Dear Cecil:

I thought I should consult you first before I went ahead with my plan to destroy the moon. My questions to you are simple, or maybe not. Could the earth (and the scum who inhabit it) survive without the moon? Would the lack of its gravitational sway cause any substantial damage aside from pissing off a lot of surfers? Would everyone all of a sudden have one serious mood swing? Just how important is this moving target? I won't begin operations until I hear from you first.

— Greg Angelone, via the Internet

Destroying major planetary bodies shows a lack of maturity, Greg. There are better ways of expressing your anger. Can't you just hold your breath until you turn blue?

At the moment I can't give you a definite answer on the effects of destroying the moon. The parties I've consulted so far think that either (a) nothing much will happen or (b) it'll be the end of the world. I'm working on getting this pinned down.

One question: How do you propose to have the moon taken out? Obviously, if island-size chunks will be raining down on Cleveland, there's going to be a significant negative impact (on Cleveland, anyway). In order not to mess up our answer, however, let's assume you're thinking of a simple process of vaporization.

My initial thoughts regarding the impact of lunar destruction were as follows:

(1) No more big tides, surfing, etc. Tides wouldn't disappear entirely, since the sun would continue to tug on the oceans, causing high tides of diminished amplitude at noon and midnight. But, as one early consultant pointed out, it's a safe bet the bottom would fall out of the tourist trade in the Bay of Fundy, noted for its tidal extremes.

(2) Dogs would have to bay at, I dunno, Alpha Centauri.

(3) Much darker at night. Duh, you say, but a fair amount of nocturnal activity among the lower orders is pegged to moonlight.

(4) The famous children's book Goodnight Moon would require considerable rethinking.

(5) One less thing to rhyme with June.

() No more eclipses. Incidentally, the next partial eclipse of the sun visible in North America will occur this coming Christmas Day. Wouldn't want to miss that, so please hold off on the destruction of the moon till after the holidays.

(8) On July 20, 2069, people will say, "Neil who walked on what?"

In other words, we'd probably cope. If it were left to me I'd say go ahead, but there are a lot of scaremongers out there. A sampling of proposed fatal scenarios:

(1) Loss of the meteorite shield and resultant flaming death. Some say that if not for the moon, all those meteorites that made huge craters (150 miles and more in diameter) on the lunar surface would have flattened Nebraska instead. Like anybody would have noticed. My feeling is, while lunar shielding may have been important in the early days of the solar system, how many giant meteorites do you see crashing into the moon now? I want to know what the moon has done for me lately.

(2) End of life as we know it. In his book What If the Moon Didn't Exist? Voyages to Earths That Might Have Been (1993), astronomer Neil Comins speculates that life would never have evolved from the primordial soup if not for the moon and accompanying tides. With weaker solar tides and thus a lesser distance between the littoral reach of high and low tides, there would have been fewer tidal pools, the petri dish for so many forms of life. As one commentator puts it, no amphibians = no land animals = no us. However, at the risk of appearing ungrateful, I have to point out that, evolutionarily speaking, we're kinda past the lizard stage. The riposte to this is that even now tidal motion helps keep the oceans churned up, circulating nutrients and generally helping to promote life beneath the waves. No churning = no circulating nutrients = no life.

(3) Orbital instability. This has been the most controversial area of all. At first my reaction was, what orbital instability? Everybody knows that the radius of the earth's orbit r = GM/v2, where G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass of the sun, and v is the earth's orbital velocity. In other words, orbital radius is independent of planetary mass, so despite the loss of 1/81 of the combined terralunar bulk, orbitwise the earth would rock on. Various individuals claim, though, that earth's orbit would become more elliptical, its axial tilt would become wobblier due to the influence of Jupiter, and who knows what else. If God had been subject to this kind of environmental impact stuff, the creation of the universe would still be in community hearings. I say let her blow. How bad could it be?

Cecil Adams
